FAT: Tom Dixon and d line introduce soft-edged hardware collection

In collaboration with British designer Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, the Danish heritage brand d line is unveiling FAT, a new hardware collection.

Tom Dixon had previously used the term ‘fat’ at his studio to describe a ‘fat edge’ or ‘fat profile’ applied to various objects, signifying a sense of generosity and softness in shape. When the studio ventured into architectural ironmongery, the same ‘inflated’ design approach was applied to a standard handle, making the name fitting. The result is a collection of bold, rounded pieces without any sharpness or angles, simply ‘fatter’ than conventional designs.

Elegant and durable rounded shapes

The collection includes a lever handle, key escutcheon, and thumb turn, along with a door knocker, pull handle, flush pull, and door stop. Like the rest of the d line range, each item is designed with a minimalist approach, making them timeless. Their appeal comes from the rounded forms and inflated shapes, rather than unnecessary ornamentation. These pieces are expertly crafted from durable AISI 316 stainless steel, a material favored by d line, and are available in a carefully curated selection of finishes to offer diverse color options.

Tom Dixon’s challenge: Innovating door handle design

Tom Dixon characterizes door handles as presenting “a uniquely challenging and highly functional set of issues, as they have evolved rather than being purposefully designed.” He notes that designer handles often prioritize aesthetics over practicality compared to conventional ones, as there’s limited scope to alter the appearance based on historical designs. Consequently, the challenge for him and his studio has been to develop a handle that not only performs effectively but also stands out from existing options.

Finishes and colours

The pieces are available a tight edit of finishes for different expressions in colour. Satin stainless steel is joined by PVD polished brass, as well as PVD charcoal and electric blue.
